But at least it's a thing that, if I can figure out how to do it, will do somebody some good. This thing you're trying to do, turning government into a petulant game where you take turns punching each other in the back of the head and then trying to hold your asses closed for two or four or eight years, nothing is ever going to get great again that way. Everybody outside of this room should know that. Everybody inside this room should know it, or they should get up and go home. And if I can begin to make amends, and oh my god do I mean "begin", maybe it can be by taking my own advice, which if I'm lucky is the one decent idea I've said in my whole time here. You should go home, and so should I. Somebody will have to do this job, somebody who doesn't believe they're entitled to it. You have to find them, and to find them you'll have to stop thinking you're entitled to choose them, and good luck with that. I'd say you should let Dr. Ford do it, because this has been a Supreme Court hearing and she's definitely the one was most human during it, but that would miss the point. She's the only one who came here hoping just to go home again. There's our example. I thought I was coming here to be given the right to make decisions about other people's lives for the rest of my life. That was half right, I guess. I still have to make decisions for the rest of my life. And I'm going to go home and start trying to do that now. That's all." |
