Prehistory
7 October 04
At the beginning of 1993 I decided to attempt to write a book in which I reviewed every piece of music I then owned. It took me over a year, but I did succeed in writing it. Not very many people succeeded in reading it, and most of them, including me, agreed that it was cheerfully unpublishable. It wasn't personal enough for it to not matter that it wasn't very comprehensive, and vice versa, and it was way too long and incomprehensibly organized for anything without either virtue.
On the web, of course, there is no such thing as "unpublishable". I present this absurd indulgence as an ungraceful prehistory and unwieldy footnote to the other absurd indulgence that later followed it. You may expend more time downloading it than it repays you in entertainment, but only half of that imbalance is my fault.
