This Kingdom Made of Longing
I was a border guard before they told us everyone was one
I manned a watchpoint in the mountains, now I pour water into drums
I was an instrument of history when we had a plan for time
now I'm an angel of division in a multiplier's line
light has a kingdom made of longing, out beyond those hidden hulls
and we sit freedom-bound and waiting for the inevitable lull

and so these streets now stretch to the ocean
and back from the ocean to the Square
and I walk from Pallisard to Marton
and you walk from Everobe to Ware
and at the corner of Cale and Bora
unless you are late or I am there...

I was a border guard before they told me everything could cease
I walked the wall against the outside, now I am locked inside this peace
we were the talismans of purity, you were the victims of your poems
now I'm an exile with a cell phone and you wash towels in a rest home
light has a kingdom made of longing, out beyond those hidden hulls
and we sit freedom-bound and waiting for the inevitable lull

and if these streets now stretch to the ocean
doesn't the ocean have its hole?
and each step from Pallisard to Marton
am I slowly growing old?
and at the corner of Cale and Bora
unless you choose this day to die...

I was a border guard in a patronage, you were a child in a dream
I've lost the things I would have offered you from the world you've never seen
I want to explain what we we believed in, why these streets were named for roles
I want to hold you through a winter plagued by nothing worse than cold
but here where my kingdom used to sparkle, you've made a city of plastered walls
and now it's me who needs protection, and you an angel of the laws

I used to follow the plans they taught me, but I've drawn this one out alone
we may be abandoned in this rubble, but we can build it into homes
if light wants this kingdom made of longing, I will love you 'til it's true
in this city lost to chaos, I will start again with you

these streets now stretch to the future
and this is an undivided land
and at the corner of Cale and Bora
with all my courage in my hands
I'll say hello this time
