We thought that the thing we had to do was get to the top of somewhere and offer something irreplaceable in exchange for something impossible from someone invisible; that that was what the songs were about, the triumph or failure of these ardent ascents. But we get to the top of the hill and there's no ethereal bazaar of redemption, no last night, no finality. It's just a hill with a road leading up it. As a song, it was glorious. As a destination, it's underwhelming. The road is more interesting than the hill, really, if we aren't running too fast to notice. And we're tired from the running, and there's nothing up here. So we turn around and walk back down to everything: songs, people, roads, the unresolved, all still waiting there expectantly where we left them, knowing we would return, hoping. |
